Legal education in India stands at a crossroads. While the establishment of National Law Universities (NLUs) has elevated standards, significant challenges remain in making quality legal education accessible and relevant.

The NLU Model

Since the establishment of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bangalore in 1987, over 25 NLUs have been established across India. These institutions follow a five-year integrated BA LLB or BBA LLB program.

Challenges

• Access and Affordability: NLU seats are limited and fees can be prohibitive for many students
• Curriculum Relevance: Traditional curricula often fail to cover emerging areas like AI law, data protection, and fintech regulation
• Practical Training: Insufficient emphasis on clinical legal education and practical skills
• Research Output: Indian law schools lag behind global counterparts in research publications

The Way Forward

Reform efforts should focus on curriculum modernization, increasing clinical legal education, fostering research culture, and ensuring equitable access through scholarships and financial aid.
